I'm home once again and not because of the snow this time :D Our darling plumber has come to fix our hot water tank and put an end to our watery woes!
Any ways, I have got bits and pieces to be getting on with but I thought I'd bring you some swatches of cream eyeshadows that I have.
Cream eyeshadows come in different forms and various brands, from high end to drugstore, sell them. I previously featured a cream eyeshadow product from the brand MeMeMe here.
I use my cream eyeshadows either as bases for powder shadows or as a quick and light wash of colour on my lids. I apply all products to my lids over the top of a primer to prevent creasing, increase lastability of the shadows and increase the intensity of the colour. My favourite primer is Too Faced Shadow Insurance but like with most things it's pretty much down to personal preference :)
Right. First set of swatches are NYX Jumbo Eyeshadow Pencils. I have seven at this point in time but they're great quality and inexpensive enough to collect all of them ;) Hehehe!

These pencils are super creamy so if you apply too much they will crease. You can apply them straight from the pencil or picked up the product with a clean finger or brush and apply that way. You can also "de-pencil" them and there are a ton of tutorials on how to do that on youtube. The problem with the pencil form is that they do need to be sharpened and I think they're too big for a standard large sharpener, although I can't confirm that. The full NYX range is not available in the UK but I ordered my pencils from Non Pareil Boutique, where they are currently retailing for $3 each.
Sticking to the same kind of format, we have MAC Shadesticks up next. As you know from my previous MAC haul post, I recently bought five of these bad boys. I did already have a little collection going though!

Shadesticks come in the same pencil like form as NYX Jumbo Eyeshadow Pencils but rather than having to sharpen them, they twist up. Much more convenient in my opinion. In terms of the amount of product you get, Shadesticks are 1.5g/0.05 US oz and the NYX Pencils are 0.5g/0.18oz. They retail for £13 each and are available from the usual MAC locations :) Despite the similarity to the NYX Pencils, the Shadesticks aren't as creamy. They're still smooth but feel drier somehow. Although I've never experience a problem with creasing with either product, I'm sure if you piled it on it would crease.
Next up we have MAC Paint Pots.

I really like paint pots. The consistency of the product is super creamy and they just apply so nicely. Each little glass jar contains 5g/0.17 US oz of product. Each jar is £13. Most of the shades I have are shimmery with the exception of Girl Friendly, Painterly and Soft Ochre, which are all matte.
Finally we have my sort of odds and ends!

The BeneFit products each contain 4.5g/0.16oz per jar and are £14 each. The products themselves are very similar to the MAC Paint Pots with the exception that they have more slip to them, making them easier to blend. They can also be used as liners but I've never tried that. The Estee Lauder products each contain 5g/0.17oz and are £14 to £15 depending on the colour. They're pretty much exactly the same as MAC Paint Pots, just in shiny packaging. That's not entirely surprising though as MAC is part of the Lauder group. Lastly the Stila Smudge Pot contains 4g/0.14oz. Like the BeneFit products this can be used as a liner too but I've never tried it out. I find it a lot thicker in comparison to all the other cream products.
And that, as they say, is that! You don't necessarily have to use any of these products as bases, you can use them on their own, it's just what I like to do with them. Also you can use gel liners as bases but I don't tend to do that.
Hope these swatches have been useful. Please feel free to comment below if you have any questions, I heart questions :)

ReplyDeletehow do you work out how much it all exactly costs in pounds?
sorry if thats a stupid question lol
i wish i had a paintpot..but i really want the nyx pencil in milk.
@desiiGirl87: I usually use www.xe.com and use the converter on there to work out how much it'll be. You have to be careful that your total is not greater than around £15, otherwise you may be subject to customs. I've been caught out a couple of times and it works out so expensive!
ReplyDeleteMilk is lovely, if a little chalky. It's a nice base for bright or light colours though, makes them really stand out. As an alternative you could try a creamy white eye kohl, that would do the same thing :)

Hi Kelly!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the reviews and swatches, they were really useful!
So I'm seriously interested in buying the NYX Jumbo Eyepencils from nonpareilboutique.com but I'm really unsure whether I'd be charged customs fees or not (I'm based in the UK)
I know you said above to limit the order to £15, but do you know how much you would get charged if the order is over £15?
Thanks for your help,
Sy
xx
@Sy: Hiya :)
ReplyDeleteThe actual limit is £18 but I tend to aim for £15 as it's all dependent on exchange rates. With the customs charge you'll get charged an administration fee of £8 from the Post Office for dealing with HM Revenue & Customs and then you'll get the Customs fee on top of that. The fee is made up of excise/customs duty and VAT and will be dependent on the value of the parcel as stated on the little customs label thingy. The actual limit is £18 but I tend to aim for £15 as it's all dependent on exchange rates. It may actually work out more cheaper to make separate orders and pay more in shipping than have one big order with a fee.
All the Royal Mail customs details can be found here:
http://www.royalmail.com/portal/rm/content1?catId=5200006&mediaId=400362
Hope that helps :)

Thanks for the link!
ReplyDeleteSo, if my order is under £18 I shouldn't be charged customs fees but can I still be charged VAT and Royal Mail handling fees?
I've heard so many horror stories where people have ordered items less than £18 but they still get charged for VAT and handling.

@Sy: If your order is under £18 you shouldn't be charged. However, if in the time between you placing the order and them shipping it the exchange rates changes there's a possibility you may be charged. That's why I tend to stick to £15 :)
